Power Inn Alliance Teams with Law Enforcement, DA to Combat Metal Theft
The Sacramento Deputy District Attorney’s Office, the Sheriff and the Sacramento Police Departments are joining Power Inn Alliance for an educational luncheon on Thursday, September 18 to address the growing crisis of metal theft and what business and home owners can do to deter it.
The “Crime and Dine” luncheon, hosted by Power Inn Alliance, began with police and local recyclers to discuss the challenges of catching thieves. It soon attracted the attention of two area Deputy District Attorneys, Sheriffs sergeants and detectives, who are looking for victims of metal theft and to educate the community on how to prevent metal theft.
“We find metals that we suspect have been stolen but we can’t file a case because there isn’t a victim to prove that the material was stolen,” Susan Nelson, Community Prosecutor, Arden Arcade said. “My hope is to grow a contact list and urge business owners to do whatever they can to make their property identifiable. That, combined with consistent investigation by law enforcement should help reduce the incidence of metal theft.”
Management from Sims Metal and Schnitzer Steel will present on the security process they take to catch metal recyclers, what they look for, and when they notify law enforcement about suspicious materials. A representative from Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) will talk about ISRI’s theft-reporting system and three metal theft bills recently passed.
The metal theft prevention and recovery luncheon will be held from 12 – 1:15 pm on Thursday, September 18 at Sacramento Recycling and Transfer Station, 8419 Fruitridge Rd. Sacramento.
