Mike Lien Named “Member of the Year;” Other Businesses Win Distinctions at Annual Awards Luncheon

Alliance Secretary and co-owner of L and D Landfill, Mike Lien, was named “Member of the Year” at the Annual Awards Luncheon. In making the award, Chairman Dave Sikich noted that Mike, “is a guy who doesn’t want to take or be given credit for anything, but he’s involved in just about everything.”

He’s a founding member of The Alliance and has been a Director for over 10 years. He sits on the Executive Committee, where he’s “everlasting secretary,” and never a meeting minutes typo escapes his scrutiny. He also chairs the Development Committee, was a member of the Vision Task Force, helped form the PBID, created the new Conflict of Interest Statement and led the team that rewrote the Bylaws. Still, Mike hasn’t forgotten his roots, always writing in the space that says, “Occupation: Garbageman.”

Other Award recipients include:

Best Improvement: Depot Park for their $91,500 landscape improvement.

Best Infrastructure Improvement: County of Sacramento for the Watt/Folson Lt. Rail Overpass.

Best New Development: City of Sacramento for the recently-opened Sim Center.

Business of the Year: Squeeze Inn, probably Sacramento’s best known restaurant and burger joint.

Local Police Officer Wins Alliance “Top Cop” Award for Keeping Bad Dudes at Bay

The third Alliance “Top Cop” Award was presented to Sacramento Police Officer Jyotis “Jay” Hasegawa for his over-the-top crime fighting efforts in the Power Inn Area. While this popular award is given to a single officer, it is intended to honor the outstanding service and effort of all members of the Sacramento Police Department.

Officer Hasegawa is a graduate of Sacramento State University’s Criminal Justice programnd and was sworn in as a police officer in December, 2007. For the past two years Officer Hasagawa has been assigned to the late shift in the east sector which encompasses the Power Inn corridor.

In terms of productivity, Officer Hasegawa has few equals as he led his team in felony arrests and several other categories including; 209 traffic stops and 96 total arrests while still handling routine service calls. Being self motivated, he uses a great deal of his own time to monitor communication between gang members and has initiated several large scale investigations based on the information he discovered. These investigations have resulted in several arrests of active gang members and the seizure of a significant amount of stolen property including: guns, ammunition, bullet proof vests, drugs, and computers from several local residences and businesses.

The impact of Officer. Hasegawa’s efforts in his patrol area is such that a recently arrested gang member told him that his fellow gang members will now call each other when he’s spotted on the Power Inn Corridor, so that they can start taking side streets or just go inside all together!
